Elementary
Our Elementary guidance curriculum is based on ASCA standards and The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, and covers SEL topics that improve student awareness, empathy, social skills, and self esteem. This curriculum is taught to each grade level by Mr. Potter, our Elementary School Counselor. Youth Aware of Mental Health (8th Grade only): Students participate in a 5 week course for Youth Awareness in Mental Health (YAM). For school districts in Northeast Texas, the program curriculum is facilitated in person by the YAM team from the Robert M. Rogers Department of Psychiatry at UT Tyler School of Medicine. The course does not contain any type of student screenings, surveys, or activities that assess mental health. Studies show that YAM reduces new cases of suicide attempts and severe suicidal ideation by approximately 50%.

Erin's Law (Anti-Victimization)
In accordance with state law, CISD is required to present a very important lesson that teaches all students about personal safety. The school counselor will present a research-based, age-appropriate lesson to teach students to recognize, react to, and report dangerous situations that make them feel hurt, scared, or uncomfortable.
Elementary students receive a brief in-person lesson by the elementary school counselor, while secondary students watch a 5 minute video created by the secondary counselor that covers these topics in more detail.
Because adults are responsible for keeping children safe, the presentation focuses on helping students identify safe adults at home, school, and the community and to learn three safety rules the children can use:
1. Say NO
2. Get Away
3. Tell a trusted adult
If you have questions or want more information about the program or this form, contact Mr. Potter or Mrs. Eckles directly at potterb@carlisleisd.org or ecklesl@carlisleisd.org.
The program is important, but voluntary.
Thank you for helping build a strong safety net for our children!
