Frequently Asked Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will the 1:1 initiative begin?

A: Beginning for the student as soon as they turn in their permission forms.

Q: How will students be prepared for the responsibility of having their own computing device?

A: The 1:1 initiative will become a part of the student's everyday classroom experience. CEVSD is developing a very specific professional development plan for all teachers in grades 4-12. This will ensure that they have the skills needed to teach your student how to use his or her device to the fullest potential. Your student will learn: digital citizenship, internet safety, collaborative communication skills and more. Students will also learn how to care for and protect their computing device.

Q: Can my student use his/her personal laptop instead of participating in this program?

A: No. We are supplying the Chromebooks for the students, so that all students have the same device for easy instruction and troubleshooting for our staff and students, and to avoid insurance risks and breakage risks by students using personal devices in the building.

Q: Does this mean that students will not have textbooks?

A: Students will continue to have textbooks; however, they can expect fewer textbooks in upcoming years as CEVSD expands its implementation of 1:1. Some students may be enrolled in courses that continue to utilize class sets of textbooks to supplement classroom instruction. It is important to note that the curriculum is not dictated by the textbook. The textbook is one of many resources used to deliver the curriculum.

Q: Will the discipline policy be altered to accommodate this new learning environment?

A: Discipline will remain the same in regards to this new initiative. Things that were not allowed before are still not allowed on the student Chromebooks.

Q: What will prevent students from accessing inappropriate sites?

A: Chromebooks do not come with internet filtering software. Carey provides internet filtering when the Chromebooks are used on the school internet connection. When the devices leave the building there will be additional offsite filtering provided by GoGuardian. It is the family’s responsibility to monitor the student use of the internet outside the school setting, as we can guarantee that a determined student will be able to jump any digital fence that the district can provide.

Q: When will the student receive his or her device?

A: In order for a student to receive the device, all of the necessary agreements need to be complete. Also, the $30 insurance cost can be paid at the time of distribution, but must be paid by September 30th in order to avoid repossession of the device. Students who meet all requirements will be issued the device ASAP. Their teachers will provide instruction regarding the proper use and care of the device, along with internet safety. Appropriate and safe use of the device will be modeled and integrated into instruction and learning.

Q: Will students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program be required to pay for insurance?

A: Yes. Students are not responsible for buying any devices, but they are all equally responsible for providing $30 for insurance coverage and any additional add ons they choose to purchase. They also are responsible if a device is broken, including all administrative fees up to the total cost of the device.

Q: When will the device be turned in each year?

A: Each student will return his or her device to the school at the end of the school year, upon withdrawal from the school district, or upon request of a staff member. It must be returned in working condition and fines may be assessed for any damages to the device.

Q: What happens if a parent does not want the student to bring the device home?

A: Parents/guardians will have the option on how they wish to handle the Chromebook guidelines in their own homes.

If they choose to have the student’s not transport their devices home nightly we will make accommodations to

store and charge the device in our building nightly.

Q: What happens if a device is not working?

A: The student will be issued a device on loan, if available, while the issue is resolved.

Q: What will happen if a student does not bring his or her device to school?

A: Students will still be responsible for the completion of their class work, without the use of the device. These are the same expectations that would apply if a student forgot a textbook or other class resources. If they cannot complete the work because they do not have their device, then they will suffer the consequences of not being prepared.

Q: How will the student’s device be identified?

A: Each device will have a unique serial number and a label.

Q: What happens if a student loses his or her device?

A: This initiative is the perfect opportunity for our families, community, parents, and staff to demonstrate the character attribute of responsibility. However, if lost, the parent/guardian/student will need to pay the full replacement cost of the device. Loaners will not be available for lost devices. If a student loses their device, they will still be responsible for all of the work related to their classes.

Q: What if the student does not have Wi-Fi access at home?

A: Wi-Fi access is available to students on campus before, during and after school. They do not need wifi to use a chromebook to complete their work as they may use it offline. In addition, high speed internet access can be purchased by families qualifying for free/reduced lunch, through Comcast for $9.95 a month. Comcast’s additional eligibility criteria may apply. Please visit InternetEssentials.com.

Q: How do I connect to the Carey Wireless Connection?

A: Your Chromebooks will automatically be configured to connect to our BlueDevilNet connection when on campus. You can manually connect to any connections when you leave the building.

Q: My laptop is low on battery. What can I do?

A: Make sure your device is charged before entering the school building. Electricity will not always be available for you to charge your device, so be sure to plan ahead. The teacher may allow for you to connect to a plug in their classroom.

Q: What happens if a student’s device is stolen?

A: If the device was stolen off campus, the theft of the device must be immediately reported to the police. A copy of the police report must be provided to your child’s school the next day school’s in session. If the device was stolen on campus, the theft of the device must be immediately reported to Mr. Rider. All parents should discuss safety precautions with his or her child.

Q: Is it required that I use the Carey BlueDevilNet wireless while at school? Can I use my own 3G or 4G Service?

A: It is an absolute requirement that all student internet traffic be filtered through Carey’s internet service. Failure to do so would be a violation of the student’s acceptable use policy, and would result in loss of privilege.

Q: How do I print from my personal device at school?

A: Even though personal electronic devices will greatly decrease the need for printed materials, there may be times that something will need to be printed. Students will not be able to print from Chromebooks while at school. If they wish to print something, and it is approved by the teacher, then they may email the file to the teacher, or “share” it on their google docs account. At home, the student may connect the laptop to their personal printer and print away.

Q: What happens if the Chromebook is Damaged?

A; The Student/Parent is responsible for any damage or loss, due to neglect or abuse, and pay a $25 administrative fee (deductible) in order for a replacement to be provided for the first occurrence. The replacement may take up to three weeks to be provided. The second occurrence for any damage or loss, due to neglect or abuse will result in a $50 replacement fee. Any additional occurrences for any damage or loss, due to neglect or abuse will result in being billed for the total cost of the Chromebook (Roughly $250).

Q: Will the students get to keep the device when they graduate?

A: We are currently looking into how long these devices will last before a refresh of all devices will take place. Since we are in the piloting stages, this is unknown.
