The Integrated BioMicroFluidics (iBMF) Lab, directed by Associate Professor Xiaolong Luo in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering, Physics, and Computing at The Catholic University of America (CUA), aims to develop novel microscale platforms that bridge engineering and biology. We handle fluids at the microscale (microfluidics), the fabrication of microscale devices and systems (microfabrication, MEMS), and the integration of biology into devices (biofabrication, bioMEMS). The Integrated BioMicroFluidics (iBMF) laboratory works with biopolymers extracted from crab/insect shells (chitosan) and seaweed algae (alginate) to construct 3D hydrogels and membranes, assemble biomolecules and living cells, and entrap optically active nanoparticles in microfluidic networks with spatial and temporal programmability. We collaborate with biologists, engineers, and chemists to develop Lab-on-a-Chip devices that support protein/metabolic engineering, cellular and molecular biology, in situ biosensing, and tissue engineering in microenvironments, helping to expedite drug discovery and improve human health. Recently, we have spanned his research interests mainly in three areas: (1) developing rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) platforms for acute bacterial infections and sepsis; (2) studying biofilm dynamics in microfluidics and developing microbiome-on-a-chip and tissue-on-a-chip devices for drug testing; and (3) electrofabricating chitosan membranes and harvesting them for low-cost direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).
