Week 1

Hook Day

To launch our new summer expedition, we took a trip around the world to visit the different habitats that we will be exploring this term.

We needed our hats and gloves in the Arctic and Antarctic habitats as it was very cold and windy!

And it was a good job we remembered our sun hats and sunglasses as when we arrived in the African Savanna and Grasslands it was super hot!

We took part in lots of different activities that will help us remember the animals we saw in each different habitat.

Check out the video below to find out what we got up to!

Geography

Before we go to investigate habitats further afield, we realised that we need practice our geography skills! We began by learning about what the difference is between a village, a town and a city. We used our 'get smart' skills to decide what we might see in each of the different areas and sorted key features into the appropriate groups. We knew that villages may have more fields and tractors, rivers and windmills than in a town but we also knew that in Carcroft village we do not have a leisure centre or a cinema, but we can find them in Doncaster town centre.

Our next task was to investigate human and physical features. We learned that human features are something humans created, like houses, bridges and roads. Physical features are things that have come from the earth, such as trees, waterfalls and grass. We used our knowledge to identify more features - some were quite tricky as they had both human and physical aspects to them! Then we thought about our own village and what features it has, we knew on our walk to school we saw lots of trees and houses, as well as shops, parks and lamposts.
