Course Description: This course incorporates field laboratory in agriculture, wetlands, and service- using outdoor learning a a vehicle for learning. CCTI has created a culture and necessity for hands learning experiences!
(Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry or Environmental Science)This upper level biology course emphasizes the interrelationships between humans and their environments. The main units of study include Forestry, Soil Science, Wildlife Science and Aquatic Biology. Additionally, the state provides a major unit for the course which changes annually and gives students a chance to investigate a topic in greater depth. The course is defined by the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and content focuses on the ecosystems found in Pennsylvania, as well as local ecological concerns. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to make informed decisions as homeowners and landowners, hunters, fishermen and voters in the state of Pennsylvania.
Forestry: (Quarter 1) Students learn basic forestry principles and practices – from tree identification to forest structure and dynamics.
Aquatics: (Quarter 2) Students work to assess the quality of delicate aquatic ecosystems. They also learn to identify aquatic organisms, manage watersheds, and determine non-point source pollution.
Wildlife: (Quarter 3) Students learn first hand about animal populations, their dynamics, and the importance of habitat conservation.
Soil: (Quarter 4) Students learn about soil structure, interpret maps, and evaluate land forms and soil characteristics that affect agricultural and development issues.
Current Event: (2019/2020 School Year) Current Environmental Issue TBD
Envirothon is a fun, academic event. It challenges high school students to think critically about the natural world and their role in it. Envirothon combines in-class curriculum and outdoor training helping students to learn more about Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soil & Land Use, Wildlife, and Current Environmental Issues.
County Wide Competition: Is held at the Carbon County Environmental Education Center in Summit Hill, PA. CCTI is able to take 4 teams to compete yearly.
