A picture is worth a thousand words!

1. Examine real photos from Grand Island, NE.  These are powerful photos!  Pay attention to the headings and the details within the pictures. 

2. Complete the Photo Study handout, putting your thoughts about the photos into words. 

Historical Fiction Writing

1. Read the nonfiction article from the Nebraska State Historical Society about the real historical marker in Grand Island, NE. 

2. You will be making your own historical marker.  Use this brainstorming handout to think through and plan your sign. 

3. Make your own historical marker, using the rough draft you have already created to help you.  Make sure that your work has complete sentences.  Pay attention to capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

1. Examine this map of Grand Island, NE.  It shows the paths of all seven tornadoes that struck that night.  

2. Look for locations on the map that are part of the historical fiction story. Circle them with a marker.
