Instructional Resources Consideration Committee Information
Purpose
In order to ensure instructional resources in Canyon ISD's secondary English (RLA) classrooms meet the needs of all our students and in accordance with policies EF(Legal) and EF(Local), Canyon ISD established an Instructional Resource Consideration Committee to review all current and future instructional resources in our 7th - 12th RLA classrooms. The committee will provide a written recommendation to district personnel regarding any instructional resource it reviews. (Canyon ISD Board Policy Home)
task and process
The committee will review all current instructional resources in 7th - 12th grade RLA classrooms or any instructional resource that has been formally challenged.
All members will read the instructional resource in its entirety.
Evaluate the instructional resource using a checklist to consider the purpose, authenticity, appropriateness, mature content, reviews and evaluations by outside sources.
Discuss the evaluations made by all committee members and determine the instructional resources’ appropriateness for its intended educational use.
Provide a recommendation by the committee to district administration.
The committee will use the American Library Association top 100 frequently challenged books lists from 2000-2009 and 2010 to 2019. If a current instructional resource appears on either list the committee will consider it.
Once the committee has completed consideration of all current instructional resources, the committee will continue to meet to evaluate all future titles submitted by Canyon ISD staff to be purchased using district funds for secondary RLA classrooms.
