Part I traces Ryuichi Sakamoto’s late sound world, moving from the emergence of tone to its dissolution. Each piece reveals a different facet of his Physis-based aesthetic: sound appearing, lingering, interacting with space, and fading.
Part II shifts into Tchaikovsky’s monumental narrative of grief and remembrance, unfolding as a single arc that rises, scatters, and collapses back into stillness.
Placed together, the two parts form a journey from sound as trace to emotion as memory.
Piano Trio in A Minor, Op. 50
A vast narrative of loss, memory, and return, moving from shock to recollection and finally collapse
Listen for how Sakamoto’s tones emerge and dissolve within the church’s resonance, and how silence becomes part of the music rather than its absence.
Here, the St. James's Church itself becomes part of the music.
Then notice how Tchaikovsky transforms that same space into a dramatic narrative, where memory surfaces, scatters, and finally returns to stillness.
The evening invites you to hear two answers to the same question:
what traces does life leave, and how does time remember or erase them?
