Music Department Performance Attendance Requirements

The Canton Music Department’s vision is to develop our students’ ability to successfully create, perform and respond to music at their highest level in a safe and nurturing environment. The study of music fosters artistic development, critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and the pursuit of lifelong learning.

The music department respects and encourages involvement in other activities, and works with all disciplines to aid in the development of the whole child. The music teacher will address any scheduling conflicts with other school events. Performance attendance requirements are as follows:

  • Attendance is mandatory at all scheduled performances.
  • Excused absences include religious holidays, illness, and family emergencies.
  • Unexcused absences will affect participation in ensembles. This will be determined by the music teacher, department chair, and principal after consultation with the parents/guardians and student. In the event of a scheduling conflict, notify your teacher as soon as possible.

Concert Make Up Policy

If a concert is missed for any of the previously mentioned reasons, the teacher must receive communication from the parent/guardian as soon as possible. Once communication has been made and the absence has been explained, the student will be given a make up assignment to complete, which will replace the concert grade.
