What is CPM?
Students at Canfield Village Middle School (grades 6-8) are using the math program called CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics).
CPM Educational Program has provided problem-based instructional materials and professional development for teachers since its inception in 1989.
CPM teaching strategies focus on how students best learn and retain mathematics. Teaching strategies rely on the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and are based solidly on the methodological research in teaching mathematics.
Research has shown that math students learn best when engaged in doing math, not just watching a teacher talk about it. Students will spend much of a CPM math class working through a variety of different problems in small teams. In addition to finding a numeric answer, students often write a short explanation or justification for why that is the answer.
Textbook
Each student will receive an e-book. I will provide directions to students on how to access this online textbook.

Homework
The homework is given in a section titled “Review and Preview”.
Each Review and Preview section consists of six to ten problems on a variety of topics and skills. Known as interleaving, this mixed spaced practice approach for homework leads to higher learning and better long–term retention.
Parent Support
The Homework Help website provides a variety of complete solution, hints and answers. Some problems refer back to other similar problems. The website it designed to assist students to be able to do the problems but not necessarily do the problems for them.
