Miss Smallwood
I am a member of Canfield High School's graduating class of '98. I also attended C.H. Campbell Elementary. I graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 2002 with a degree in Early Childhood Education including a Reading Endorsement for grades Kindergarten through Twelve. During my time at Miami, I completed training in Orton-Gillingham, a structured literacy program which supports the research behind the Science of Reading. I continued my education at Youngstown State University where I received my Master of Early Childhood Education. Additionally, while attending Youngstown State University I earned my Fourth and Fifth grade Generalist degree in Education. Currently I am pursuing my Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at Kent State University.
I began my career in 2002 as a Reading and Math Intervention Specialist at both C.H. Campbell and Hilltop Elementary. While I worked as an Intervention Specialist, I earned an additional certification in Wilson Reading, another reading/phonics-based program which supports the Science of Reading. Following my time as an Intervention Specialist, I taught half day Kindergarten at C.H. Campbell for five years. Following my five years as a Kindergarten teacher I became a full-time First Grade teacher at C.H. Campbell until assuming my new position as a Title I Teacher in the Spring of 2024.
I am currently the Title I Teacher at both elementary buildings. In this position, I work with small groups of students on expanding their literacy skills such as phonemic awareness and reading comprehension. I also organize and study progress monitoring literacy data for all elementary students.
Some of my favorite activities, other than teaching, include spending time with my family and playing with and walking my dog, Jude. I also enjoy supporting my favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Hospital, where I am a Partner in Hope.
