School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

What is School-Wide Positive-Behaviour Support?

School-Wide Positive-Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is an evidence-based framework for preventing and responding to behaviours in schools. It includes a system of tools and strategies for defining and teaching positive behaviours, acknowledging appropriate behaviour and correcting inappropriate behaviour through explicit teaching and modelling. It aims to create a positive school climate, a culture of student competence and an open, responsive management system for school leaders, staff, students, parents/carers. The goal is to create an environment that promotes success for all students.

SWPBS runs along a continuum from Tier 1 for all students, Tier 2 for a small cohort of students to Tier 3 for individual students. Students will move up and down these tiers throughout their time at school.

Why do we use it?

SWPBS used in schools has been proven to:

-reduce problem behaviour,

-increase academic performance,

-improve perception of safety,

-reduce bullying,

-improve social-emotional competence,

-increase positive school climate and culture.

What does SWPBS look like at Campbells Creek Primary School?

The SWPBS values are then expanded into expected behaviours for the whole school, in the form of a matrix (which is below).

Class teachers explicitly teach the positive behaviour expectations just as we explicitly teach academics. Mistakes in behaviour are treated as learning opportunities, much as mistakes in learning are treated as learning opportunities.

Whole School Positive Acknowledgements

At Campbells Creek Primary School, we offer SWPBS positive acknowledgements through the use of a Whole School Reward System. This is to create consistency between all classes and staff.

Gotcha Cards

Students receive "Gotcha" Cards for demonstrating expected behaviours from our school matrix. These cards are placed onto individual student lanyards, which are on display in their classrooms. Students can trade in their "gotcha" cards for tangible rewards.

Whole Class Rewards

As well as individual rewards, our school has whole class rewards systems in place. Each time a student 'claims' or exchanges their individual gotcha cards for a reward, this value is marked off on a class marble jar. When the class reaches 300 marbles, they have a whole class reward. The reward is decided on by each class. So far we have had playground plays, pizza and movie sessions, movie and popcorn. Coming up we even have a Fashion Show to look forward to!

Responding to Student Behaviour

Campbells Creek Primary School has developed a list of minor and major behaviours, and uses a whole school response to behaviour. This is so that students receive consistency and have a clear understanding of behaviour expectations and the consequences of what will happen if expectations are not met.

Minor level behaviours are dealt with in the classroom by the classroom teacher, using this Creating Successful Classroom Model

When minor behaviours continue, or if students display major behaviours, students are referred to the principal as per our Decision Making Flow Chart below.

Our Student Wellbeing and Engagement policy outlines our behaviour management and can be found here

All behaviours are logged onto a whole school reporting system called XUNO. This is so teachers and leadership can track student behaviour and help put adjustments and supports in place when needed.
