In our Reading and Mentoring Program, an adult is partnered one on one with a student for a weekly reading routine experience. This partnership lasts for the entire school year. The mentor uses a scripted program, Heggerty, to practice phonemic awareness with the student, works with the student on their first grade unit word list, then reads aloud with the student.
Teachers select students they believe will benefit from the one on one reading support and relationship with the mentor.
Volunteer mentors are provided with a free background check and training to use the reading support materials.
Volunteer mentors and students are matched up based on the mentor's preference for school and the needs of our students.
Volunteer mentors can choose to work with one or two students individually for up to an hour commitment.
On a designated day, which the volunteer mentor chooses, the volunteer and student will practice the provided reading routine.
Volunteers commit to the program for the entire school year.
There will be an end of the year celebration. Please see all our pictures from prior celebrations.
Our goal is to pair every first grader with a reading mentor!
