Fitness Concepts & Wellness

  • Review the FITT principle and 5 components and give examples of the each

  • Examine a fitness assessment

  • Finding and determining heart rate (rest, max, target)

  • Understand the importance of exercise in leading a healthy lifestyle

  • Set personal fitness goals

  • Concepts of health and fitness (Classroom Based Assessment)


Nutrition

  • Explain the obesity epidemic and factors which influence it including cultural and environmental reasons

  • Describe short and long term consequences of obesity

  • Describe ways to improve nutritional/physical health

  • Set nutritional and life style goals to help guide them towards healthy lifestyles

  • Understand and demonstrate knowledge of obesity related non-communicable disease including: symptoms, treatment and prevention

  • Understand how the components of health are affected by personal decisions and risky behaviors.


Body Systems/Communicable & Non-Communicable Diseases

  • Explain the structure, functions and common problems and maintenance of key body systems: nervous, respiratory, skeletal, cardiovascular, and muscular

  • Understand the difference between communicable and non-communicable diseases

  • Show an understanding of how the body systems are interconnected and affect one another

  • Show understanding of the scientific terms of the skeletal systems


Drugs

  • Understand the affects of drugs on the body and mind

  • Understand how physical, social, mental and emotional health is affected by drug use

  • Learn, practice and apply refusal skills in realistic situations

  • Demonstrate knowledge of communicable and non communicable diseases associated with drug use


Family Life & Sexual Health

  • Be able to define HIV and AIDS and tell the difference between the two

  • Understand how a healthy and an AIDS infected immune system works

  • Be able to tell ways in which STI’s are contracted

  • Be able to identify signs and symptoms of common STI’s

  • Understand the physical, emotional and social effects of sexual relationships

  • Understand common birth control methods and their effectiveness in disease/pregnancy prevention

  • Demonstrate understanding of possible short and long term consequences of becoming sexually active


Surviving Adolescence & Preparation for High School

  • Understand and accept different personality characteristics

  • Be able to understand the emotional and physical effects of peer pressure

  • Be able to resolve conflict situations among peers
