VOCAB, STUDY GUIDE

"ID'S"

STUDY GUIDES ARE REQUIRED FOR EACH CHAPTER (NOTE: THESE WILL SERVE AS A WAY TO GET CRITICAL VOCABULARY AND SEE ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDINGS AND REVIEW RESOURCES!). See Units of Study tab for outlines.

Required:

  • Vocab

  • Essential questions (w/examples for support)

  • Chronology

(Notetaking from book beyond the required elements is highly recommended for context-building and Change, Continuity over Time (CCOT), but not required).

TRY THIS INTERACTIVE APPROACH: While writing out the definitions for the ID terms, think about elements of the PIECES analysis and highlight key words in the colors shown in the "PIECES of History" image below.

VOCAB RUBRIC (0-2 PTS.) Note- this scale is a measure of your vocab definition complexity and mastery. It counts as part of the Homework category (20%). Full points (1 pt. per vocab term) is awarded when a "2" is designated; 1/2 credit for an overall rubric score of "1." If a zero is given, the student must redo the assn. and explain how it was improved to earn points back.

Example:

😊Cuneiform – This form of writing created by the Sumerians circa 2900 BCE, used graphic symbols baked into clay tablets. This flexible writing system was originally intended to preserve records, but it also allowed them to communicate complex ideas about a variety of topics, helping create a unique tradition that helped shape Mesopotamian culture for the next several millennia. (pg. 16)

NOTE:

This is an expanded definition. It gets to the significance aspect and allows for more connections to the region and time period.

It’s the “So What?”

Song Dynasty - Concrete monarchy in the tenth century lasting three centuries (970-1279 C.E.). The Song mistreated military leaders and focused more on industry, education, civil administration, and the arts. The Song’s empire ate up all of China’s economy. When they tried to tax the lower class, they rebelled. Military was poorly run by the uneducated in combat and strategy, which led to the nomadic people living just on the edge of China’s borders. The Kitan, a semi nomadic peoples, captured the Song capital, Kaifeng, and instituted the Jin empire. However, the Song empire did survive in southern China, with its capital in Hangzhou. The Song dynasty finally came to an end when Mongols took over in 1279. Ex. The first Song emperor was Song Taizu, who, through military control, took over China and then instituted the policy of keeping the military under a close eye (KL 2020).
