Pre-production - During this step filmmakers plan their films, working in teams to brainstorm and research ideas, draft screenplays and scripts, and visualize their production using storyboards. Filmmakers also make business arrangements, including budgeting, and legal arrangements, like obtaining permission to film on a site or to use
Production - During production, a filmmakers primary role is shooting their film. Filmmakers work with a crew to ensure their film has a high production value giving attention to lighting, sound, scenery and props. Filmmakers also direct their talent's on-camera performance.
Post- Production - Once shot, a film's footage must be edited. An editor's work is both technical and artistic. They work to build the story through image and sound, always considering how each decision they make while editing will impact how the final cut will be perceived by the audience.
Distribution and critique - Films are meant to be seen! During this final stage, films are brought to the public. We will explore who to advertise and publicize our films. In this class, your films will be distributing in one of two ways: (1) posted to this website, or (2) published to the Discovery Media Studios YouTube Channel. Your final film of the semester will be shown at the Discovery High School Film Festival at the end of the term.
Work is posted each Monday and is due 10:15 the following Monday unless otherwise noted on Google Classroom.
M, Th 10:15 - 11:00
Learning will look different online, but here is what you can expect from my class. Each Monday, I will post a weekly learning pathway, on this website and in Google Classroom. Each learning pathway will challenge you to explore new topics and new ways to learn from home. There will be activities for you to do, both online and offline. Pathways will be divided into three sections. The first section is called Learn It. In this section will be resources for you to explore in order to learn about a topic on your own. The second section is called Practice It. In this section I will provide you with a variety of activities that require you to apply or practice what you learned. The final section is Evidence of Learning. In this section you will have a task to complete and submit to me in order to show what you learned that week. For larger projects, you will also submit a Weekly Project Work Report. Both your Evidence of Learning and the Project Work Report are due by the start of our first Zoom meeting the following week. On a typical five day week, this will be Monday at 12:30.
Pathways are designed for you to complete independently and on your own, but if you get stuck use your resources. Chances are someone at home, or a classmate, can help you out. If not, send me an email and we can set up a time to video conference during my office hours.
Be sure to mark your calendars to be online 12:30 on Mondays & Thursday. This is when we will hold live class meeting to check in and connect with our classmates. I will use this time to building community, provide collaboration opportunities, share your work, and to support your learning by working 1:1 and with small groups to answer questions that you may have.
Please remember! If you need to contact me, send me an email. Until I see you in person, be safe and be well. I look forward to getting to know you all!
