Work Permits

The Work Permits office is open year-round, but is closed during Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break and Spring Break. We are open for limited hours during summer. Normal turnaround is 3 days, but during busy times, your work permit can take up to a week to process. Ensure that you have a clean, easy-to-read application (scan or good-quality photo) attached to your email when you submit it to workpermit@caliva.org.

CA Assembly Bill 800 is a law that aims to ensure high school students know their rights on the job and where to seek help if they face abuses. The goal is to empower young workers with resources and education so that they can enter the workforce with a strong understanding of their rights as workers.

How to Get Your Work Permit

You must satisfy ALL 3 requirements:

2.0 GPA minimum on last report card or progress report (just for that grading period - NOT the cumulative GPA)
No "F" grades on last report card/progress report
Regular attendance in classes

How to calculate GPA

1) Read the CAVA work permit policy here (Includes information for both school-issued work permits and entertainment work permits).

2) Download the B1-1 (application for a work permit) here.

3) Fill out the student section and sign (use a pen - no digital signatures allowed). Then have your employer and parent fill out their sections on the application. Make sure they sign and date with a pen. *Yes, you have to be hired before you apply for a work permit.

5) Scan the form to your computer using your printer. Save as .pdf. *A good quality photo of the application works great, too! (Make sure no shadows or fingers are on the form).

6) Email the completed B1-1 to workpermit@caliva.org (password protect if including your social security number)

7) Receive the work permit (form B1-4) in your school email, print, sign, and submit to your employer on or before your first day of work
