What is the one thing we can do to support our child as a learner?
Talk to your child! Check the assignment calendar and ask them not only what they are doing, but why and how. Conversations about key themes and topics in their classwork will improve their recall and cement their comprehension of a topic.
How can I improve my (my student’s) grade?
This is our MOST frequently asked question and the answer is probably the easiest to answer–complete the work that your teacher assigns when they assign it. Although the answer is simple, it requires organization accountability, and self-advocacy.
What does that look like?
Be on task
Ask for help when you don’t understand (ask a friend, ask a teacher)
Limit conversation in class to academic conversation
Check the Google Classroom To-Do list and assignment calendar each day when you get home.
Make arrangements to meet with your teacher before or after school for extra help
Take advantage of test retakes or do test corrections when offered.
What is your late work policy?/Can I make up work?
Math: Mr. Pastore’s late and missing work policy (click and scroll down).
English: You may turn in late classwork until the end of a unit (generally announced a week in advance). Late Unit Assessments can be turned in at any time during the trimester because they are worth a significant part of your grade.
Science: No late digital work will be accepted once the assignment is entered in Zangle/Q. It may be late in Google Classroom, but if it hasn’t been graded and entered in Q, students may still complete the assignment.
History: I do not accept late work, you may use an emergency pass as a late pass for one exception.
Do you offer tutoring?
All Team Denali teachers are available for extra support before and after school if you check with us for availability ahead of time.
Do you offer extra credit?
Math: Extra credit is usually not offered. Please complete all of the assigned work correctly and on time.
English: I occasionally offer small academic assignments for extra credit. Because regular work can be turned in late for full credit, I expect students to take advantage to improve their grades instead of relying on extra credit.
Science: Occasionally I offer a small extra credit assignment, but it should not be counted on to make a significant change to your grade.
History: No, do the assigned work so you don’t have to do extra.
What if I turn in my work incomplete?
Math: Please do not turn in incomplete assignments. Assignments will be graded with a 0 until they are completed.
English: You will get partial credit. You can turn it in late for full credit as long as I receive it by the end of the unit.
Science: I do not accept incomplete work. Work submitted incomplete will be counted as a zero and cannot be resubmitted.
History: You will get partial credit. I typically collect work at the end of the period so you will need to stay focused during class time to complete the work for full credit.
Do you give homework every night?
Math: Any work not completed in class is considered to be homework and is due by midnight that day.
English: Students typically have to pass 2 iReady assignments due each week. iReady is assigned on Monday and due at 3:30 PM on Friday. If students are off task during class, they may need to complete some classwork at home.
Science: I almost never give homework. Students who are off task or who require more time to complete their assignments may need to complete work at home.
History: Very rarely - History assignments are to be completed during class time and not at home.
What do I do if I (or my student) is absent?
Check the assignment calendar and follow up with the assignments posted in Google Classroom. When you return, check the absent work bin for assignments.
Can I turn work in late if I’m absent?
You have the same amount of days you were absent to complete your work and turn it in. For example, if you are absent for one day - you have one extra day to turn in your assignment. If you are absent for two days, you have two extra days to turn in your assignment.
How do I know if my student is behaving in class?
Visit the Q parent portal for comments for each week regarding student behavior and/or check their Participation and Listening scores.
How are Participation and Listening points determined?
Students get 4 points daily and lose points for behaviors that don’t align with the Husky Pack and disrupt their learning and the learning of others.
What if my child is having a conflict with another student?
This depends on the nature and severity of the conflict, but students can fill out an incident statement or submit a counseling request.
