This summer, our intrepid explorers will work together to create a digital "How To" guide for astronauts heading off to colonize Mars, with suggestions from the life hacks we learned while in COVID quarantine that they can use to fight boredom and social isolation while meeting their needs!
To answer this question, our young scientists will take a deep dive combining science, perspective-taking, engineering and community-building skills. Here's our project brief!
Now that we know what driving question we're trying to answer, we have to identify what things we need to know in order to do so!
Here is what our great team of scientists and problem-solvers came up with!
Can humans survive on Mars?
What would it take for humans to survive on Mars?
Would we need special Mars spacesuits?
Could we make a big enough bubble to put the whole planet inside it?
Are there viruses or other dangers on Mars?
Can we make medicines from the things we would find?
What’s under the surface of Mars?
Can we explore underground on Mars?
What is the core of Mars?
Can plants survive on Mars?
Is there water? Can we access it?
Are there clouds on Mars? Are they toxic? Could we blow them away?
Would we meet something or someone when we get there?
Can we get there?
What did we learn about other planets that are similar to earth?
Is the planet stable?
How did the planet get so hot?
Is this volcano going to erupt again?
•What did we learn about how to get information?
•What did we learn about getting along with the other people we’re with, since we’re going to be with them for a long time?
•What did we learn about how to fight boredom?
•What did we learn about how to expand the bubble of people we get to interact with beyond the people in our own house?
