Beginning in April 2021, eligible National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) will earn a Recognized designation. The designation will expire the July following expiration of the teacher’s National Board Certification. NBCT candidates will earn a designation and generate an allotment for their district in April following their successful certification.
To be eligible for the Recognized Teacher Incentive Allotment designation, NBCTs must:
Be listed as a Texas teacher in the NBCT directory. NBCTs with an out of state directory listing must update their information by January 31st to be eligible for a designation that school year.
Be employed as a teacher by a Texas school district or public charter (coded as 087 Role ID in PEIMS/TSDS)
Hold an active National Board certificate.
Teachers with a Recognized designation must be employed as a Texas teacher (087 role ID in PEIMS) and complete a creditable year of service to generate funding for that year. The Recognized designation generates anywhere from $3,000 to $9,000 for the NBCT’s district. The total amount depends on the socioeconomic status of the campus’s students and the campus’s rural status.
To be eligible for certification, teachers must meet the following education, employment, and licensure requirements prior to starting the certification process:
Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Candidates for the Career and Technical Education certificate are required to hold a bachelor’s degree only if their state required one for their current license.
Have completed three years of successful teaching in one or more early childhood, elementary, middle or secondary schools.
Hold a valid state teaching license (or meet the licensure requirements established by your state for a school counselor if applying for the ECYA/School Counseling certificate) for each of the three years of employment you verify.
Provide official American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) certified ratings of Advanced Low or higher from ACTFL speaking and writing proficiency assessments if registering as a World Languages candidate. For more information on this prerequisite for World Languages candidates, refer to the Guide to National Board Certification.

The Region 10 ESC National Board Cohort (Track 1) will provide selected teacher candidates with support over two years with a 3rd-year option. Selected candidates will meet monthly with NBCT mentors to deeply analyze National Board certification requirements in preparation for the completion of portfolio and assessment entries. Candidates will delve into topics such as the 5 core propositions for accomplished teaching, the different types of writing required for national board submissions, how to successfully create teaching videos, and how to analyze student work. Candidates for this cohort will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other teacher candidates going through this process as well as NBCT mentors in their certification area. Self-reflection of teaching practices and peer review of entries will also be emphasized. Candidates are expected to submit at least two entries per year during the two-year support period.
