The Framework for Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) in Career and Technical Education (CTE) provides a tool for developing high-quality FCS programs of study. It is designed to help local and state CTE administrators leverage their FCS programs to support students preparation for high-skill, high-wage, and/or in-demand careers and meet local economic and workforce demands for talent. FCS educators can also use the Framework to support their work program and instructional planning to enhance the relevancy of their FCS programs.
The career pathways and clusters suggested in the Framework were identified through a national survey of FCS State Administrators about which clusters and pathways were supported through their CTE state leadership initiatives. Courses aligned to these pathways can facilitate CTE concentrators in programs of study that meet workforce and economic needs. CTE administrators should use local, regional, and state workforce demand data to guide decisions about which FCS programs can be leveraged to meet both student interest and workforce demand. But as you can see within the Framework, the opportunities to leverage FCS can be tailored to a CTE program’s needs

The Hospitality & Food Production career field includes career pathways that promote food and nutrition, culinary arts, and hospitality careers. Leveraging FCS to support these pathways can result in professionals who are experts in nutrition and dietetics, food production and manufacturing, and hospitality and tourism. With additional training and education, these high-demand career pathways lead to opportunities for a family-supporting wage. Additionally, communities are investing in hospitality and tourism as a key strategy to attract and retain young people who value communities with chef-centric food and beverage establishments and local attractions. The food and nutrition sciences and technology pathway prepares students to address challenging problems in food systems as they explore product development, food security, and nutrition’s impact on the human body. It is important to note that this career field supports many manufacturing jobs in food production.
The Education & Human Services career field allows students to pursue a career with altruistic motivations, leveraging foundational technical knowledge in human development, mental health, and exploring the interrelationships of individual wellbeing, family strengths, and community vitality. Incorporating education and human services career pathways in CTE programming can be key workforce development solution. For example, Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs contribute to a strong ECE system where workers can feel comfortable entering, re-entering, or remaining in the workforce. These pathways equip students for high-skilled occupations where workers are challenged with the complexity of addressing human growth and wellbeing.
The Visual Arts & Design career field attracts students to careers where they can blend skills in creativity, merchandising, science, and technology to meet human needs in apparel, textiles, and interiors. Whether it is designing apparel for aging populations or creating interior work spaces that promote collaboration and productivity, FCS students are applying a human-centric lens to design. Through rigorous curriculum and instruction that promotes design thinking, three-dimensional visualization, and applying digital tools, students are preparing for careers that span the country in manufacturing facilities, design firms, retailers, and research and development labs.

American Sign Language is a manual language which entails vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and body movement to express meaning for communication. Lessons or units also include cultural aspects to help the student understand and interact with the Deaf. Students are introduced to these aspects in units, which are ordered in a manner to build upon the previous units. Lessons are structured around language needed or common life situations. Major concepts are reinforced through reading materials, video, cooperative learning activities, and long-term assignments.
