At EJA, students become authors at an early age. This year Kindergarteners wrote memoirs and then elevated their project by animating and recording their voice in Keynote. Their projects were combined in iMovie so that students can play it back and listen to their classmates books.  In addition, third grade used Book Creator to turn their research into informational texts. Each student recorded themselves reading their books and shared them with family and peers.

EJA students use technology to elevate their learning. Kindergartners learned about the life cycle of a Dandelion by taking pictures of each stage and creating a life cycle video using Clips. Second graders learned about New York State and created a stop motion video traveling down the Hudson River using Clips and GarageBand.  In addition, using time-lapse on the camera and iMovie, second graders recreated the show Nailed It for an assembly.

EJA students participate in tech class as well as attend a STEM Lab. Here they code Ozobots, fly drones, and build cars.

Coxsackie Elementary School Learning

Each year students complete a community impact project. Kindergarten uses iMovie to teach us how we can improve the planet. First graders equipped with green screen technology, the app PhotoSpeak and iMovie on our iPads, sent a heartfelt message to our community about protecting the Short Eared Owl. Additionally, 4th Graders and Community Service Members created an iMovie highlighting the roles of the 4th Grade Community Service Program.

CE students also attend tech class and STEM Lab where they explore coding through Playground, build vehicles and fly Tello drones. They create cross- curricular projects, like the 4th grade Monster Advertisements, that used GarageBand and iMovie during Art and Music.

Finally, our students use technology to take virtual field trips. 3rd graders visited Australia and Brazil. 4th graders learned about NYS by creating time-lapse videos and searching for a mystery school using clues given to them by the other school.

We connect as a community through a shared experience reading a student chosen book. During Spring 2021, students chose Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown and they took pictures with their iPad and shared them to a padlet.

Coxsackie- Athens Middle School Learning

Middle School students are Scientists and Mathematicians. Students use their iPad camera to record Science experiments and analyze scientific data using Numbers.  They then take what they learn and create informational pieces using Clips. Students created a call to action to teach others about the invasive species the Black-headed Carp. 5th graders explained how the lung works in relation to other systems.

Students are also writers and journalists publishing informational and fictional texts that they wrote. For example, a 5th grader researched and created a Clips video on the extinction of animals. Another 5th grader describes the horrors of animal abuse.  8th grade students write short stories that include the elements of a story and published the story using iMovie.

The American Sign Language class extensively integrates technology. Middle School students created a virtual ABC book recording themselves signing.

Throughout the year teachers and students take pictures of the different activities. Then those pictures are put together using iMovie to celebrate the end of another school year.

In the classroom, we use iPad devices for language practice through creative projects. For example, American Sign Language students signed favorite recipes. Spanish students created an iMovie trailer as a cumulative project.

We provide students with opportunities around technology that has real world application. Students C-A Student Helpdesk (CASH) was mirrored after the Apple Genius Bar. CASH students help Tech Services as well as work on projects such as creating tech tip videos using Clips or iMovie. For the Motor Sports class, students used Clips to record test runs of the vehicles they fabricated. Finally in Entrepreneurship, students worked on proposals that were presented in C-A Shark Tank. The winner was an app designed for students connecting with colleges.

iPad use does not stop with academic projects, but extends to special events.  For example, this year the ESBY Awards was live streamed and presented by students using Keynote.  The scholarship awards for graduation was prerecorded using the iPad camera, and edited using iMovie. Finally,  the drama advisor used GarageBand to act as the sound effects for the play Into the Wild.

Having 1:1 iPad devices affords us the opportunity to integrate technology seamlessly. In addition to creative projects, we use iPad devices for hall passes, and tracking life ready skills.
