In years 8, 9 and 10 Mathematics is taught in mixed ability form classes. All teachers in the department teach in Key stage three. Pupils study all aspects of Number, Algebra, Shape, Space and Measure along with Handling Data. Topics and themes covered in year 8 are extended in years nine and ten. Assessment 2 and 3 results in year ten are used to determine the pupils who will be eligible to take the Accelerated GCSE Maths in year 11.

Pupils complete one Using Maths task 'Decorating a Bedroom'. This is the beginning of their Key Stage three Using Maths portfolio. They also complete a unit on Financial Capability toward the end of the year.
There are continuous class assessments from September to December (usually three), followed by Spring and Summer assessments.
Pupils receive their written report in June.
All Year 8 pupils are automatically entered for the UK Junior Maths Challenge in April. Cost of pupil entry is kindly covered by the PFA.
Pupils complete two Using Maths tasks: 'Picture Framing' and 'Which Book is Harder to Read?'. This is added to their Key Stage three Using Maths portfolio.

Based on all of their tasks in years 8-10 pupils are given a level (level 4-7) in their competency in 'Using Maths'. They also complete a unit on Financial Capability toward the end of the second term.

Pupils receive their written report at Easter.
