GCSE Mathematics

GCSE Mathematics Specification

All Year 11 and 12 students study GCSE Maths at Higher level and  follow the CCEA specification.

Standard pathway

Year 11: GCSE Higher Level Mathematics with first exam in June

Year 12: Continue study of GCSE Maths with second exam in June

All students in St Patrick’s sit the higher level exam however there are three pathways possible:

·         M3 followed by M7 (Grades B-E)

·         M4 followed by M7 (Grades A-D)

·         M4 followed by M8 (Grades A*-C)

Pending the M3 or M4 result, we will decide if your son will take the M7 or M8 completion paper. (Scheduled for June in year 12)

There will also be an opportunity for your son to take the M3 exam in November of year 12 if the M4 has proved too difficult for him, or if an M3 re-sit is required.

 Accelerated pathway

Traditionally, students that fall in the top 25% in year 10 are offered the accelerated maths pathway.

Year 11: GCSE Higher Level Mathematics taught in one year

Year 12: GCSE Further Mathematics taught in one year (Pure maths, mechanics and statistics)

Needless to say this is a very challenging option for students as the material is covered at a faster pace. If your son enjoys mathematics, is regularly achieving high assessment grades and would like to pursue a career that may incorporate a high level of mathematics, this would be a highly recommended option.

The criterion for entry to the accelerated pathway relies on the Assessment 2 score combined equally with the Assessment 3 result. Your son must be placed in the top 25% of the year group to secure a place in this class.

Students opting for this will study an additional GCSE.

FAQ: I don’t know yet if my son is eligible or should be considering the accelerated pathway?

Answer: Speak to his current maths teacher for guidance, if the advice is favourable; select the accelerated pathway box on the option form when it is published.

FAQ: When will I know the outcome?

Once the Assessment 3 is completed and marked and the Vice Principal has finalised the timetable, you will be informed if your son has secured a place in his preferred option.

FAQ: Will my son be disadvantaged at A level if he has not studied GCSE Further Maths?

Absolutely not, the A level course is taught ‘from scratch’ and only prior knowledge of GCSE at higher level is assumed.

If you have any further questions, please ask your son’s subject teacher in the first instance or alternatively, Mrs Kennedy.
