Dear Parents/Caregivers and Students;
I hope this message finds each of you doing well and staying focused on all the good there is in the world, our nation, our state, and our community! Each of you plays a role in demonstrating that "good" to each other and to your community. Now more than ever, we have an opportunity to let our good shine for all to see!
To my students - I Miss each of You So Much!!! I miss everything about each of YOU! From your beautiful faces to your funny jokes; to your witty personalities and especially all the genuine wonder and beauty that each of you brought with you to our DAPE class each day!!! I’m hoping that each of you continues to shine forth all of your amazing wonderful qualities, so that you are able to positively affect your families, community and our world; each day that we are apart during this Distance Learning time!
It is very hard to not be with you in school together and in our DAPE class, enjoying all the fun gross motor activities and movement skills that we do together each class day! I miss all the fun and great music and songs we sang and listened to during our time together! BUT, there is good news, and what it is, is that….. YOU’VE Got This!!! YOU Already Know so many of the gross motor skills that you learned while we were together in DAPE class!
You know how to work on Flexibility by doing a stretching warm-up and Yoga. You already have a great start on your Locomotor skills, (running, galloping, skipping, jumping, leaping, slide stepping, and hopping) to name a few! You already have a great start on Object Control/Manipulative Skills: (Catching an object, throwing a ball over-hand, throwing a ball underhand, rolling a ball, striking an object or ball using a bat, racket or club, dribbling a ball and kicking a ball). You also KNOW how to keep your body strong with all the Strength activities we’ve done together: planks, front arm supports, push-ups, core exercises-Superman, airplane and popcorn; balance activities, as well as knowing some stability ball exercises too! You know how to make your muscles work hard over time with Muscular Endurance, by being able to do curl-ups; sit-ups, and crunchies.
Now it’s time to “Show What You Know” to your Parents and Caregivers! You could even invite them to join you in all or some of these great activities, and decide on a time, and place when you can do some or all of them together!
In the DAPE K-5 and DAPE Pre-K packets that you will receive, there are activities for 4 of the FIVE areas of health related fitness: muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. The fifth health related fitness item, body composition, is a benefit, or by product, of working on each of the first 4. Working on the first 4 will create a more lean body mass and make a positive difference in your overall health. :)
Some benefits of physical fitness include: Improved immune system, enhanced self confidence, strengthening of bones, and an enhanced appearance.
Included in the DAPE PreK-5 Packets are activities for the 4 health related fitness items specifically described for each ability level of student; visual pictures of specific activities; and for some students descriptions of individual student specific exercises and suggested activities.
Coming in the near future through email or digital platform will be: This parent letter, a DAPE Activity Log, video lessons, as well as links to more movement ideas and DAPE information via the district’s website, and or paper packets.
A digital platform may be used via Google classroom, Video and Google hangout. Be looking for the DAPE link on the district website or through an email notice from your students case manager, or me Joan Stock; your student’s DAPE teacher.
Lastly, all of the gross motor and fitness activity material sent to you now and in the future meets the The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards for Physical Education, Mn K-12 Academic Standards for Physical Education ; and of which coincides with our current C-I Schools K-12 Academic Physical Education Standards.
Parents/Caregivers - In both the State and District Standards; The recommendation for the amount of Physical Activity for students is 60 minutes per day! This 60 minute recommendation does include your student’s DAPE Pre-K-5th grade gross motor activities and skill areas time amount (15-20 minutes 1 or 2x a week ), that was outlined in your students DLP IEP amendment; or recommended now in this communication from Joan Stock, Pre-K-5th Grade DAPE Teacher.
Again, additional communication will be given on an ongoing basis going forward via email, paper packets, and or via a Digital Platform (video, Google classroom, or google hangouts). Whichever way you indicated on your DLP IEP amendment.
A DAPE Activity Log will be sent out (look for that to come); and should be used to record student’s gross motor skills, activities and exercises as outlined by the DAPE PreK-5 Packets, and additional activities to follow, then shared with your student’s DAPE teacher when presenting progress data.
Respectfully,
Developmental Adapted Physical Education Teacher Pre-K-5th Grade
