Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors is a Bram-new comedy you can really sink your teeth into. Filled with clever wordplay and anything-goes pop culture references, it’s a 90-minute, gender-bending, quick-changing, laugh-out-loud reimagining of the gothic classic, perfect for audiences of all blood types. A delightful mix of Monty Python humor with the rock & roll sexiness of Rocky Horror!
In the treacherous mountains of Transylvania, a meek English real estate agent takes a harrowing journey to meet a new and mysterious client, who also just happens to be the most terrifying and ferocious monster the world has ever known: Count Dracula! As famed female vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing and company chase Drac from Transylvania to the British countryside to London and back, their antics are guaranteed to increase your pulse and cause bloodcurdling screams—of laughter.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN- Please note that the play sends up gender “norms,” and most characters can be played by actors of any gender, age or type.
DRACULA – Commanding European dialect. Hugely sexy, magnetically handsome, rock star presence with a killer body, he is a narcissist whose greatest love is himself – and his leather pants. Bored with women falling over him, he becomes obsessed with Lucy when he hears of her strength and adventurousness. The less she needs him, the more interested he is. He travels to Whitby to find her and make her his bride for eternity.
JONATHAN HARKER – RP British dialect. Prim and proper and obsessive-compulsive real estate agent, frightened of his own shadow. Engaged to his childhood crush, Lucy Westfeldt, and enamored of her fearlessness. Once bitten he loosens up…a lot… and becomes a rock star in leather pants.
LUCY WESTFELDT – RP British dialect. Brilliant, plucky earth scientist daughter of Dr. Westfeldt, she is full of energy and the spirit of adventure and often underestimated because of her beauty. Engaged to Jonathan, but when Dracula moves to Whitby, she is curious about his strange ways and impressed by their similar interests.
MINA WESTFELDT – RP British dialect. The “less attractive”, “less intelligent” Westfeldt daughter, she lives in her sister Lucy’s shadow and is desperate for attention. She is immediately (pathetically) receptive to Dracula’s charms.
DR. WALLACE WESTFELDT – British dialect. Lucy and Mina’s father, a blowhard; self- important misogynist given to proclamations and posturing with his pipe. A doctor caring for the criminally insane, he has recently lost his wife to consumption.
DR. VAN HELSING – German dialect a la Mel Brooks. Brilliant and sturdy German vampire-hunting doctor from the University of Schmutz. Deadly serious in the way Germans can be, she is accustomed to people not believing she is a real doctor. Strong, shmart, unt bolt, she is a woman of action.
RENFIELD – Cockney dialect and salivary issues. Insane patient of Dr. Westfeldt who lives to serve and loves to eat bugs. In a word, the dude is nuts.
KITTY RUTHERFORD – Cockney dialect. A dotty kleptomaniac patient of Dr. Westfeldt, she serves as a maid in his house.
There are also multiple minor characters that may be played by the leads, or may be cast as part of an ensemble. They include: LORD WORTHINGTON (RP British dialect)/LORD CAVENDISH (Scottish dialect)/LORD HAVEMERCY (Texas accent) DRIVER (Eastern European or Russian dialect) CAPTAIN (sea captain dialect) BOSUN (Irish dialect) GRAVEDIGGER (cockney dialect)
Come prepared to read from the script, no monologue required… but work on your accents!

AUDITION NOTICE – Staged Reading
THE TAMING By Lauren Gunderson
Directed by Jean Miller
Audition Dates: Saturday, July 25 at 2pm and Tuesday, July 28 at 6pm
Audition and performance address: 545 Shasta Ave. Morro Bay
Performance dates: Friday & Saturday, Sept. 4 & 5 at 7pm and Sunday, Sept. 6 at 3pm
The cast is all women. The play explores current themes of extreme partisanship, feminism, and Constitutional law with an all-female cast who portray characters at a Miss America contest in Georgia, as well as a few of our historical Founding Fathers and their wives. In a raucous, hilarious, somewhat reality-altered landscape, the importance that compromise played in founding our nation is explored, and concludes with the importance of compromise that can be reached in finding commonality. There is some sensitive material in terms of the fact that one of the characters gives the others “ether” and sends them on a “trip” of sorts. Cell phones and the rights of panda-shrews figure prominently.
Cast of Characters:
PATRICIA: 30’s-50’s, conservative aide to Republican Senator Peter Baxter (R-GA). Also plays JAMES MADISON.
BIANCA: 30’s, (could go a little younger/older) hipster activist, blogger, influencer, way liberal. Also plays INTERN, sweet, good-girl intern. Also CHARLES PINCKNEY, an advocate of slavery.
KATHERINE: 20’s-‘30’s (a little flex here in balancing cast) passionate Southern belle, pageant winner, master-mind, far more devious and intelligent than one might expect. Also plays GEORGE WASHINGTON, MARTHA WASHINGTON, (from off-stage), and DOLLEY MADISON (who is MARTHA in a different “wig”…. which we will work out)
Actors will read from sides from the script.
If you are interested in the role of KATHERINE, please be prepared to sing a few bars of America the Beautiful a cappella, badly is fine, as that is what the script calls for.
