Student's free exploration of science requires open access to equipment that is often expensive, breakable, and potentially dangerous if not handled with care.
Some of the equipment in the classroom is checked out for the student to use the entire year. Students are provided a box labeled with their lab number (and the section letter) and most of the equipment is labeled with their lab number as well. If items are broken or lost at the end of the year due to carelessness the student will be responsible for replacement costs. At the beginning of the school year students use the Lab Equipment Checkout Form to check that all the equipment has been given to them and that it is in good working condition. If a student loses an item in their lab box they need for class they are asked to fill out an Equipment Replacement Form. Students have the option of bringing a box with a lock to class if they are concerned with other students going into their lab box.
Students also have access to two drawers of equipment which is labeled with their number (but not their section letter). These items are not shared with students in the same classroom but are shared with students with the same lab number in other sections of science. Students have been told if they notice items missing or broken they should notify me immediately so I can determine which student is responsible. Items used from these drawers need to be replaced at the end of the class so they are available for the next student.
Other items such as microscopes, scales, living animals, and books are provided for student's in-class use. Students are expected to use these items carefully. If items are broken due to carelessness the student will be responsible for replacement costs. Student's use of equipment and freedom in the classroom may also need to be restricted if hey cannot be trusted to handle materials in a careful safe manner.
