At Viking eLearning is organized around Advisory groups. A student's Advisor is a good resource for general questions about eLearning. All students in middle school are expected to complete the eLearning tasks listed below. In addition, teachers may assign additional tasks which will be assigned through Google Classroom.
Newsella is a digital resource students learned to access and use in their Advisory class. It promotes literacy skills by providing high-interest, current event news articles related to classroom content. For this portion of the student's eLearning the student should go to Newsela.com, login using the 'Google Login button'. They should access two articles of their choice. After reading each they should take the quiz Newsela provides for the article. They should write a brief summary of each article to be shared with their Advisor.
Prodigy is a digital resource students learned to access and use in their Advisory class. It promotes math skills by providing game based math problems and tutorials appropriate to the student's math ability. Teachers receive a report on student's use and progress using the website including how much the student was interacting with the website and content that may have challenged the student. For this portion of the student's eLearning the student should go to Prodigy.com, login using the 'Google Login button'. They should spend at least 60 minutes progressing through appropriate activities that the website provides.
If weather permits students are expected to go outside. They should shovel, sled, or do a similar vigorous activity for 30 minutes so that their heart rate raises. Selfies of the student with rosy cheeks can be emailed to the student's advisor or brought in and shared the following day.
Google Classroom is a Google app students use daily. Each teacher uses it to send students messages and digital assignments which are organized into each of the student's classes. Students access Google Classroom on their Chromebook. They can also log into their Google account from any device connected to the internet by going to Google.com, selecting the blue 'Sign In' button at the top right of the screen, and filling in their school username and password. Then the student selects Google Classroom from the list of apps or they could go to classroom.google.com. For this portion of eLearning the student should start by going to their Advisory class. Advisory teachers will post directions and content students may need for the eLearning day. Students should also check each of their classes for any new content their teachers post. They should make sure to check back throughout the day for items posted after the start of the school day.
Students have access to grades, including a list of missing assignments a teacher may have posted, through Student Access. Parents have access to the same information through Family Access. Students log into their account often. They should check for any assignments that are "posted as missing" from the list of student missing assignments. If a student is unclear how to complete the assignment they should email the teacher of the class that posted the missing assignment. If a student recalls completing and turning in a late assignment they are encouraged to send an email to the teacher telling them when and how the assignment was turned in.
Students have access to email on their Chromebook or by logging into gmail from any web based device (similar to accessing Google Classroom). Students should read any email sent by their teacher(s) and check back for more messages throughout the school day in case updates to the eLearning plan have been sent out. Students and parents are also encouraged to send email to teachers. They will be monitoring their messages throughout the entire day. A list of Viking teacher's email addresses are available when viewing a student's schedule through Family/Student Access or on the Viking page of the district website.
