Robotics is difficult to begin with, but here at Boulder High, we do it UNDERWATER!!
Boulder High Robotics is a CS and Engineering club focused on mechanical and electrical engineering problem-solving. The club is open to all BHS students, regardless of prior knowledge of engineering or computer programming. In keeping with our school mission, the robotics club and team is focused on using engineering and technology to help students become civically engaged and move along their path to becoming college and career ready. To those ends, our older students mentor the younger students to help them learn the fundamental engineering skills of CAD modeling, soldering, electrical engineering, and programming for sensor input and motor control. For more information, email jessica.klauzer-zimm@bvsd.org or contact@robosharks.org
Each year, the team competes in the MATE Underwater Robotics Competition. The competition mission is centered around ecology, sustainability, and civic-mindedness and dedication to the natural world through creative problem-solving challenges related to real-world underwater challenges.
Past challenges have included using the ROV to document environmental changes, farm seagrass, repair offshore windfarms, or inspect aquaculture pens. Building an underwater robot is fun, but building one for a specific goal is even more engaging. Participating in the MATE ROV competition can motivate students and help them see the value of working together for a common goal.
This is our official team movie. Want a better understanding of the MATE competition and the motivation for this type of robotics? Check out this great film starring Jamie Lee Curtis and George Lopez, among others. The movie is based on a true story of a group of students who set their sights on a goal to compete against engineering giants like MIT, CalTech and many others. You'll have to watch the movie to find out what happened! The movie was inspired by the article "La Vida Robot," WIRED, 2005.
