Academic Monitoring (and "Call an Audible")

Levels PK-12 Content - Any

One of the biggest differences between a teacher with strong results and one without (assuming both are starting with a quality lesson plan) is what the teacher does during independent practice (Bambrick-Santoyo). Monitoring each student and delivering feedback changes the game. Academic Monitoring (formerly called Agressive Monitoring) is actively giving feedback to every student on a pre planned set of specific skills during independent practice. A teacher exemplar is leveraged to determine the skills monitored during each feedback lap. To academically monitor, you need a tracking form and 2-3 intentionally planned success skills you are monitoring for. You will also need pre selected tracking codes and an intentionally planned walking path around the classroom. When monitoring, you may notice "in the moment" that some or all students need reteaching or extension and decide to adjust your plan to meet that need. In football terms, you are the quarterback "calling an audible" on the field in the moment.

These videos talk through how teachers can conduct Aggressive Monitoring during their lessons. The video is simply a reading aloud of a slide deck, so listening to it with no video is a fine way to access the information.

PRO TIP

Pro Tips!

Pre-plan your scanning points. Stay focused on the skill you selected for each lap.

Note that monitoring in the moment saves time grading papers later..and it gives students the feedback they need immediately.

** Some prefer to call this "intentional" modeling instead of "aggressive.
