The Counselor's Role
Services Provided By The Counselor
As a School Counselor at Superior Elementary, we provide a variety of services to students:
Classroom Lessons: We go into each classroom on a regular basis and lead a lesson that aligns with the BVSD Elementary Counseling standards. These lessons focus on social-emotional learning, bullying prevention, school readiness skills, and career exploration. The counseling curriculum includes: Sources of Strength, Second Step SEL and Bullying Prevention, and Zones of Regulation.
Small Group Counseling: In addition to whole class lessons, we also provide small group counseling as needed. The groups are formed based on student needs and strengths. While group topics vary based on need, some examples of topics include: friendship, self-compassion, and self-regulation. Groups are limited to 4-6 students within the same grade and typically last six weeks.
Individual Meetings: While the majority of our time is spent in classroom lessons or small groups, we also provide individual student counseling as well. Students have the ability to request to meet with a counselor if they would like to talk about something individually. K-2 students are asked to let their teacher know first if they would like to talk with a counselor. Students in grades 4-5 have a written "Request to See the Counselor" form that they can fill out in their classrooms. All students can also access the online request form. Individual meetings with students are generally the result of a student, parent, teacher, or administrator referral and are not ongoing services.
The Need For School Counselors
"The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Elementary school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, elementary school counselors help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/emotional skills in response to issues they face."
