Nuts and Bolts About Home Learning

Goals of Home Learning

  • To maintain a sense of community and connection

  • To ensure students continue to receive academic support during a time of limited access to education

  • To provide some structure and keep students engaged

Content Focus and Time

Teachers will be prioritizing standards for each content area in order to provide lessons and assignments focused on the highest priority learning objectives. Work should only total 4 hours per day for all periods and classes (half of our typical day).

Expectations

Teachers will…

  • Post content (lessons, assignments, activities) on their assigned day by 8:00 am

  • Engage students in Virtual Classrooms 2 days a week for each class period

  • Confer with students 1:1 or in small groups as the need arises

  • Post all due dates on the Home Learning calendar at the beginning of each week

  • Provide feedback on learning activities within 24 hours of submission

  • Respond to all emails within 24 hours

Students will...

  • Log on to Google Classroom or Schoology for each class every day to check for assignments and updates from the teachers

  • Join Virtual Classrooms on Mondays and Tuesdays

  • Complete assignments in the time frame given by the teacher

  • Contact teachers in a timely manner with any questions

  • Log in to Office Hours as needed

  • Follow all dress code guidelines when meeting in virtual classrooms or 1:1 with teachers

  • Be responsible and respectful digital citizens

Parents will…

  • Support students in making a daily schedule

  • Support students in having a quiet working station

  • Encourage students to email teachers with questions or concerns

  • Partner with teachers if any questions arise

Instructional Format

Google Classroom or Schoology

  • Lessons, videos, announcements, resources, assignments and assessments will all be posted in either Google Classroom or Schoology

  • New content will be posted twice a week

  • Announcements and resources may be posted daily

Virtual Classrooms

  • Each teacher will conduct Virtual Classroom meetings for each class period once a week

  • Virtual Classrooms are intended to provide support to students in a live, interactive format

  • Students DO NOT have to join Virtual Classrooms each day but it is highly recommended

Office Hours

  • Each teacher will hold office hours where students can meet one-on-one or in a small group with the teacher

  • Students are asked to be in the living area of their home ideally with an adult present

  • Contact teacher directly to schedule a meeting

Grading

  • Grades are not our primary focus and we encourage you to not set goals around grades during this time. We are looking for a level of engagement and work completion. Teachers will be focused on providing constructive feedback emphasizing the learning/thinking processes, the level of performance and how students can improve.

  • You are expected to complete assignments. If you are having difficulty completing, please reach out to your teacher. Your teachers will lead with grace and understanding for assignment completion. An acknowledgment will be given to most assignments.

  • If an assignment will be used for a grade, the teacher will indicate that in the daily task/assignments and provide an explanation of how you will be graded.

  • While individual assignments may be graded, at the end of the semester all courses will be graded on a pass/fail basis.

Attendance

  • Attendance will be taken every Friday for each course based on

      • Task completion

      • Individual check-ins with teachers

      • Attendance in Virtual Classroom discussions

      • Posting information in Google classroom or Schoology

      • Or other means determined by the teacher at the beginning of each week

  • Students will receive flexibility with attendance and should receive understanding for attendance if students are unable to connect to online materials, have family responsibilities to attend to, etc. Please make sure to connect with teachers in these circumstances
