Club time will be dedicated to preparing for the Regional Tournament in late January. The top six teams in each grade level from each regional tournament (54 teams total) will be invited to compete in the Optimist Brain Bowl Championship Tournament in late February. 2.) CODING AND GAMING CLUB - starting in late August, at lunch on Fridays.. Club will focus on coding fundamentals by programming animations and basic apps, with the introduction of the recommended sequence of computer science concepts through the process. Club members will then begin coding in Unity, a cross-platform game engine used to create 2D & 3D games.

3.) SCIENCE FAIR CLUB - Those interested in pursuing a science fair project and exhibiting and competing at the Corden Pharma Science Fair at CU this winter will commit to the Science Fair Club. The Club will meet WEEKLY on Mondays in the library from 3:15-4:45 starting Oct. 21, until the BVSD Science Fair. hosted by CU. Ms. Cooper will be supported by Peter Laird, a SHMS parent, in running the club. Peter has developed and taught a science program for upper elementary aged students at Superior Elementary and has had great success doing so. It's also worth mentioning that Peter has judged the Corden Pharma and Colorado state science fairs for many years and is most enthusiastic about helping out with science fair pursuits next year. As Peter has been at the judging table a number of times, he has insight into how to succeed at the fairs that we can use to advise the students. Science Fair paperwork can present as a big burden on the adult sponsors and student scientists alike, so Peter and Ms. Cooper will be there to support the students through the paperwork process. We plan to partner each science fair club student with an experienced science mentor (either a Fairview student, a CU student, or an adult expert in his/her particular field of study) to support the students through their individual projects. Science Club will also invite interested science-minded middle schoolers to form a Southern Hills Science Bowl Team! Teams compete in the Colorado Middle School Regional Tournament in early Feb. Students who join Science Club can take part in a science fair pursuit, the Science Bowl competition, or both!

4.) FIRST TECH CHALLENGE CLUB - FIRST Tech Challenge teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge. Teams design, build, and program robots - raise funds - design and market their team brand - and do community outreach to earn specific awards. Participants are eligible to apply for $80M+ in college scholarships. Each season concludes with regional championship events and an exciting FIRST Championship. Club kick-off will be in early September. Stay tuned for more details from Ms. Cooper and please let her know if you are interested in this pursuit! Visit FIRST Tech Challenge site for more info.

5.) DEBATE CLUB - Should all kids have chores?, Should homework be banned? Do violent video games make people more violent in real life? Is Apple better than Android? These are just some of the topics we’ll be exploring in Debate Club. A few Fairview High School Debate Team students will help mentor and coach our team. Stay tuned for more information about the Club’s start date, meeting times, and schedule…and in the meantime, please visit The National Speech & Debate Association Middle School Competition Events Guide.
