Checking for understanding can happen during a lesson, right after a lesson or during work time. There are a variety of teaching strategies that can track progress toward student mastery of the Knows and Dos.
We can use verbal responses, visual thinking strategies (like a penny for your thoughts/2 cents, sticky notes) or written responses. We can incorporate daily reflections, like a shared take-a-way or exit ticket. We can also assess through watching the whole class in their studio skills, developing checklists for specific skills.
