Susie Dykstra is beginning her 15th year as a science teacher and her 1st year at Monarch High School. Woohoo!!! As an educator, Ms. Dykstra's goal is to make science accessible, relevant and authentic for all students, and to help students improve as critical thinkers, problem solvers, entrepreneurs, effective collaborators and communicators, and agents of change in a dynamic, global community.
Prior to teaching, Ms. Dykstra completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry at Dartmouth College in 2008 where she studied how the actin cytoskeleton within lymphocytes allowed the cells to shape-change in order to execute an immune response. In 2010, she completed her MA in curriculum and instruction from the University of Denver through the Boettcher Teachers Program.
In her spare time, Ms. Dykstra plays ice hockey, enjoys photography (she's a fan of Nikon!) and gardening, enjoys making caramels and taking long walks with her three dogs, Benjamin, Gordie & Bodhi. Random Fact: She used to have a small farm where she raised Nigerian Dwarf goats, alpaca, chicken, turkeys and a pig (Kevin Bacon)!
One thing that Ms. Dykstra is passionate about is working with girls and other under-represented students to get involved in STEM fields.
