Susie Dykstra is beginning her 18th year as a science teacher and her 3rd year at Monarch High School. Woohoo!!! As an educator, Ms. Dykstra's goal is to make science accessible, relevant, and authentic for all students, and to help students improve as critical thinkers, problem solvers, and collaborative agents of change in a dynamic, global community.
In her spare time, Ms. Dykstra plays ice hockey, gardening, reading, making sweet treats, and hiking with her dogs, Gordie & Bodhi. Random Fact: She used to have a small farm where she raised Nigerian Dwarf goats, alpaca, chicken, turkeys and a pig (Kevin Bacon)!
Prior to teaching, Ms. Dykstra completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry at Dartmouth College in 2008 where she studied how the actin cytoskeleton within lymphocytes allowed the cells to shape-change in order to execute an immune response. In 2010, she completed her MA in curriculum and instruction from the University of Denver through the Boettcher Teachers Program.
She spent 10 years as a Noyce Master Teaching Fellow at the University of Colorado at Boulder collaborating with other physical science and math teachers to research and explore how students learn physics, and continues to serve as a mentor for current Noyce students.
One thing that Ms. Dykstra is passionate about is working with girls and other under-represented students to get involved in STEM fields. As part of this work, she strives to build connections between her current students and STEM professionals.
