Dear Centaurus Students and Community,
Our Warriors Read! program invites all students — regardless of grade level or course — to select a text that best matches their reading preferences and reading levels to enjoy over the summer. This is optional unless your teacher or program has asked you to participate! There is no assigned book, no written assignment, and no project. Just read a book that interests you. (Please note that some LA classes have required summer reading assignments. Students who are entering a class with required summer reading must complete that required assignment and are welcome to participate in this program too!)
If students already have a book they want to read, that’s great! If not, we have curated a list of suggested titles by asking CHS students and staff members for book recommendations.
Hundreds of eBooks and AudioBooks can be checked out through SORA. Books that are not available through our district’s resources can often be found through your local library or a retailer like The Read Queen, Boulder Book Store, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon.
If you would like to know more about the content or age-appropriateness of a book, a great resource is Common Sense Media.
Please enjoy a reflective, peaceful summer, and remember: Not every book is for everyone, but everyone should read books. Also, students who complete a book over the summer are welcome to visit the library in August for a prize.
Happy Reading!
The Centaurus High School Library
Why should we read this summer?
While summer offers a necessary break from the academic pace and rigor of the school year, it also offers an opportunity to rediscover the pleasure of reading and to enjoy a lazy summer afternoon with a good book. Much has been written about the “Summer Slide,” in which students’ academic skills start to diminish over the summer break. Fortunately, research shows that much of the slide can be significantly reduced with one simple remedy: regular reading. Also, students who participate may come to the CHS Library in the fall for a prize!
What is required?
This is optional unless your teacher or program has said that you are required to participate! There is no assigned book, no written assignment, and no project. However, there will be prizes in the fall for students who participate.
How/where can I borrow a book?
There are several ways to obtain the books for this program! Students returning to CHS may borrow books in print from the CHS Library over the summer. You can also borrow books from the Lafayette Public Library (or any other public library that you belong to). Both your school and public library also offer access to digital ebooks and audiobooks. Please watch the video tutorial on how to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from the CHS Library and additional information about using SORA on your phone or other device is available here.
I really love reading. What else is happening this summer?
Lafayette Public Library has a summer reading program! You are welcome to participate in their summer program and the CHS Warriors Read! program at the same time. They also have exciting LafayetteREADS community events planned, including a teen discussion of Clap When You Land, by Elizabeth Acevedo, on Wednesday July 28th. Register in advance for a FREE copy of the book!
If you cannot find what you need, please email Ms. Turgel for assistance.
