This page details the general process I used to paint my models. The steps I use when creating a model usually follow the process of Build - Prime - Paint - Base, but you can switch it up. Edge Highlighting and Drybrushing are advanced painting techniques.
Building
Most models come unassembled and it is necessary to build them. Follow the instructions included in the set and glue using plastic glue (which is toxic stuff) or super glue (which is less toxic but super sticky). Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area if you use plastic glue!
Sometimes it is a good idea to assembled your model after you paint it if the model is very detailed and/or has hard-to-reach places. If you paint before you glue, prime and paint your model first, then glue it using superglue (not plastic glue, it melts the paint). Then you should base (see below) your model.
Priming And Basic Painting
It is necessary to prime your models because the paint will not stick otherwise. Applying primer is like applying spray paint. Just make sure you don't go overboard or you will lose important detail on your model.
Here is an example video of priming. Let your models dry a bit longer than 15 minutes (an hour at least). Please note that this video is from the Warhammer Youtube channel.
After you prime, add basic colors to your model until you are happy with how it looks. Make sure you cover all of your model (unless you want primer showing through).
Edge Highlighting
Edge highlighting adds depth and detail to your models. It is typically used on armor and weapons. You use a lighter color on the very edges of your model to make them pop out.
Here is an example video of edge highlighting (1:02-7:38). Please note that this video is from the Brushstroke Youtube channel.
Drybrushing
Drybrushing brings out highlights in the model by only adding paint to the high parts of the model. It is edge highlighting, only less controlled (and quicker).
Here is an example video of drybrushing. Ignore the fact that they recommend only using drybrushing brushes and paint. You can use any kind of paint or any kind of brush. Make sure there is a reduced amount of paint on your brush when you begin. Please note that this video is from the Warhammer Youtube channel.
Basing
Basing makes the base of your models look awesome. You can add textured paint, plants, snow, and drybrushing effects.
