English Language Arts

*Fundations- A multisensory and systematic phonics, spelling and handwriting program (lowercase letters, uppercase letters, cvc (consonant vowel consonant) 

*Heggerty- A Phonemic Awareness Curriculum 

*Small Group Reading Instruction- Students will be reading in groups based on their own reading level and abilities, groupings are fluid and change based on student(s) needs. We work on letter names, letter sounds, rhyming, syllables, decoding and encoding words. 

*Heart Words- We will introduce high frequency words formerly known as sight words.  

*Writing - Students will begin the year writing with pictures, then using words to describe their pictures and finally students will be working towards using complete sentences in their writing. We will focus on starting with uppercase letters, correct spacing between our words, using the lines correctly and adding correct punctuation. We talk about how our pictures and words need to match. We will be working on the following types of writing: narrative, opinion, and nonfiction writing pieces among others.
