Welcome to Sixth Form

Message from The Director of Sixth Form at Burnham Grammar School

Thank you for your interest in the Sixth Form at Burnham Grammar School (BGS).

Choosing the right institution for the next stage of your academic studies is a critical and often daunting decision. I hope that the information contained with this Virtual Sixth Form Site will enable you to make an informed choice about your future and fully appreciate what the BGS Sixth Form can offer to you and also understand the responsibilities you will have for both your academic studies and the broader BGS community.

Students accepting places in the Sixth Form must understand and commit to the full curricula and programme of events that aim to develop the broader skills which are essential to succeed at university and in the world of work, as well as ensuring that you achieve the best possible grades at the end of year 13.

Students at BGS study three or four subjects at A Level depending upon their GCSE results and participate in the Extended Project and PSHCE programmes of study. At A Level students study subjects to A2 with internal exams used to identify progress at the end of year 12. These internal examinations will be key to deciding the predicted grades for university applications through UCAS.

I hope you enjoy watching my video introduction to the Sixth Form Open Event site and I look forward to welcoming many of you to BGS from September 2022.

Mr J John

Assistant Headteacher

Life as a Sixth Form Student at Burnham Grammar School

Life in the Sixth Form is very different from your experiences at Key Stage 4.

You will find that in most classes there are fewer students and you will have a greater number of lessons for each subject than during your GCSE studies.

There will be an increased expectation that you will study independently and develop the skills required for a university or other higher education study programme.

Developing these study skills is essential if you are to cope with both the increasing volume of work and degree of difficulty and challenge that A Level study presents.

Members of our Sixth Form will find many opportunities for leadership to support their academic interests.

The positions of Head Boy, Head Girl, and Prefect as well as Senior Sports Leader are some examples of the roles available to students, which look impressive when applying to the very best universities; both within the United Kingdom and internationally.

These roles are open to external students who join our Sixth Form and we have had many such successful applicants in recent years, including for the posts of Head Boy and Head Girl.
