STEP 1
Interested in participating in this year’s Science Fair? Here’s how to get started.
Use the links in this material to explore Science Fair project ideas. You may also use other websites or library books.
Feeling creative? You’re welcome to invent your own experiment—there is an Originality category this year!
Write down the websites or articles you use for research.
Pro tip: Create a Google Doc to save your links so they’re easy to find later and can be printed for your Science Fair board.
When you’re ready, fill out the Google Form in Step Two with a parent’s help.
Before submitting, students must confirm that a parent:
Approves participation
Can help obtain needed materials
Projects must be completed individually (no siblings or friends).
Parents may help only when adult tools are needed (such as hot glue guns) or to take photos.
We provide the Science Fair board, an information packet, and ongoing support—reach out anytime with questions.
This is meant to be a fun, creative, real-world experience using science, technology, communication, and art skills.
We can’t wait to see your experiments!

STEP 2
Complete the Science Fair Google Form by
📅 Friday, 10/30/26
Approved students will receive:
An approval letter
A school-provided Science Fair board
An information packet
All materials will be distributed before Thanksgiving.
Students will work on their projects from November through January.
Friday, 1/22/27
📅 Monday, 1/25/27
🕘 During school hours
⏱️ 5-minute presentation to judges
Students must use the school-provided Science Fair board (no store-bought boards).
Projects must be experiments, not demonstrations.
Experiments test a hypothesis over time.
Demonstrations (like baking soda and vinegar) are not allowed.
Students will present their project boards to the judges for 5 minutes.
Applying means committing to complete the project.
If challenges arise, students should reach out for support early—we are here to help. Please do not wait until the last minute or quit.
Because space is limited and planning is extensive, only apply if you are excited and ready to commit.
Most 4th and 5th-grade classes will participate as part of a class assignment. Please check with your child’s teacher for details.
STEP 3
Please review the grade-appropriate Science Fair Packet below. You may view or print the PDF to learn about guidelines and rubrics.
To get started, watch the JPL Science Fair video to learn how to plan and complete a science fair project.
When you’re ready to begin, you can use this Google Slides resource. Make a copy for yourself or use it as a guide.
This guide will help you:
Organize your work
Create your poster board
Start early and work a little each week, especially for projects involving plants or long-term observations.
Science Fair projects must:
Follow the scientific method
Change one variable and observe the results!
Be experiments, not demonstrations (such as Coke and Mentos)
If you have questions, please reach out anytime—we’re happy to help!
