STEP 1
If your child would like to participate in this year’s Engineering Expo, this is where you begin.
Click the links in this material to explore ideas. Find a real-world problem and think of something you could design and build to solve it.
Write down the websites or articles you use—these are your sources.
Pro tip: Copy and paste your links into a Google Doc so they’re easy to use later for your application or display board.
With a parent’s help, complete the Google Form in Step 2 (posted in the next material).
Before submitting, check with your parent to make sure they approve and can help you get the needed materials.
Students must work independently (no siblings or friends).
Parents may help only with adult tools (like a hot glue gun) or by taking photos.
This should be a fun and creative experience! You’ll use engineering, technology, speaking, and art skills to solve real-life problems.
Original inventions are encouraged and can earn more points on the rubric.
We are excited to see your inventions!

STEP 2
Fill out the Google Form application to participate in our Engineering Expo.
📅 Applications are due Friday, 10/30/26.
Once your application is submitted, the Science Committee will review it. If approved, you will receive:
An approval letter
A Science Fair Board
A project packet
Boards will be distributed at school in November.
You will have until the end of January to work on your project.
📅 Projects are due Friday, 1/22/27.
🎤 Presentations will take place during school hours on Monday, 1/25/27.
Please read the attached rules before applying. Key highlights include:
You must use the school-provided Science Fair Board (no store-bought boards).
Your project must be a design that solves a clearly defined problem.
Example:
“The problem I see is that my little sister cannot reach the light switch. I will design a light switch extender to help her reach.”
You will give a 5-minute presentation explaining your project and board to the judges at the end of January.
By applying, you are committing to finishing the project, even if it becomes challenging. If you get stuck, reach out for help early—don’t wait until the last minute and don’t quit. We believe in you, and perseverance is part of the learning!
When you apply, you take a spot that could go to another student. Because a lot of planning goes into this event, you can just apply if you are truly excited and ready to commit.
Most 4th and 5th-grade classes will participate as part of a class assignment. For details, please check with your child’s teacher.
STEP 3
Don’t wait until the last minute! Work on your project a little bit every week, especially if your design requires building, testing, or revising.
Remember, engineering means:
You identify a problem
You design and build a solution
You test, improve, and redesign based on what you learn
This is not a demonstration or model without testing.
