Pretty proud of what our 8th grade Design Squad came up with!
STEM Lab students were tasked with going out into the building and surveying staff to identify a problem in our building in need of a solution. Then they had to brainstorm possible ideas of how to fix it and build a working prototype.
Many teachers reported having issues with the "Emergency" buttons that were recently installed in classrooms. Namely, students and staff kept inadvertently pressing them.
How could we keep these buttons from accidentally being pressed while still maintaining easy access in the event of an emergency?
Students were encouraged to keep their designs clean and simple, elegant and efficient. It had to be made from cheap, readily available materials. You had to be able to build it quickly and easily (to aid in mass manufacture), and to repair it just as easily (so it wouldn't end up as waste).
Here's what they came up with (along with attractive photos showcasing the prototype from all angles, as well as a proof-of-concept test demonstrating how a student couldn't accidentally hit the button with their backpack).
These are now in high-demand and the students are busy building one for nearly every teacher in the building! Excellent work!
