Applications are available to rising 6th graders (i.e., current 5th graders) each Spring.
The application process is open to all students, regardless of circumstances.
Applications are anonymized and evaluated on a blind basis whenever possible.

event for Parents and Students in early March.
Information will be distributed by district elementary school counselors in late February.

Students who score >80% in Math on State Assessments
Students who successfully participated in Gifted & Talented Camps
These criteria are not determinative. Applicants are evaluated holistically.
📝 The Application Process consists of 3 Rounds:
ROUND 1: An above-grade level ITBS Science Test is administered to all applicants.
Testing data (including KPREP and CASE scores) are compiled for each applicant.
ROUND 2: Qualified applicants are invited to complete an On-Demand Writing task
and submit Teacher Recommendations from current S.T.E.M. instructors.
ROUND 3: 50 applicants are invited to complete a hands-on Performance Task and
conduct a brief Interview with a panel of teachers and administrators.
💌 Acceptance Letters are sent home by the end of April.
Students who are offered admission must confirm their acceptance (i.e., intent to enroll/attend).
Otherwise, available space may be offered to those placed on the Waitlist.

A: Every child is different—they all have unique skills, interests, and passions. Fortunately, there are lots of great opportunities available at every BCPS Middle School. But at Discovery, we're looking for...
bright and industrious students who feel ready (and able) to take on more of a challenge;
problem-solvers and critical-thinkers;
students who like to build and tinker, who curiously take things apart to see how they work,
only to put them back together again even better than before!students who can apply strong Math & Science skills to real-world problems and work collaboratively to develop innovative solutions.
students who are willing to dig a little deeper and move a little faster, and who are excited by the prospect of being around others who feel the same.
