FAQ

How much time will I spend on Zoom?

K - 3rd students must have synchronous opportunities to meet on Zoom for 15 minutes a day. During this session, your Independent Study teacher will answer any questions you or your student has about learning apps or assignments as well as teach a mini lesson on a topic recommended by your student's teacher or a lesson best taught live.

4th - 8th grade students have the opportunity to meet once a week for 15 minutes. During this session, your Independent Study teacher will review completed and/or missed work with your student as well as answer any questions that you or your student has.

What if I can't meet on Zoom due to my time zone?

If your student cannot meet on Zoom, your Independent Study teacher will try to meet with your student the school day before you leave. While on your trip, your student must respond to a daily email to count as "live interaction" with a teacher.

What if I won't have WiFi available the whole time?

You can still apply for Independent Study and we will determine if we are able to assist you.

When is the Independent Study work due?

Ideally, Independent Study work is best completed each day so that your student is not behind when they return to class. However, you do have the same number of days as absent to complete your work. For example, if your student misses 5 days of school, they will have 5 school days to complete their work once they return to school.

What if I don't apply for Independent Study?

Without participating in Independent Study your student will be marked as “absent-unexcused” for any such days and classroom work will not be provided. In the State of California, 3 unexcused absences is considered truant.

What if I already ordered school meals?

You would need to cancel your meals the Tuesday before the next week you ordered for.
