Sarah Brackett and Sutherland Philip saw a pollinator garden at another high school, and were motivated to partner with the Whole Child Collaborative, a Berrien RESA Student Organization. Abbie Benfield, the founder and leader of the organization helped get funding from the Frederick S. Upton Foundation to make it happen at their high school. She also took steps in guiding the students throughout their journey. With Mrs. Frost's help they chose a location, and began the hard work of installing a restored prairie habitat that will serve as a natural pollinator garden for years to come. Mrs. Frost has used her research from working with the Kellogg Biological Station's Long Term Ecological Research facility, which is a Michigan State University campus, as well as her knowledge on plants and gardening to select the proper native plant species to attract a wide variety of pollinators such as: Monarch Butterflies, Bumble Bees, and Honey Bees.
The mission of Berrien Community Foundation is to connect the power of people who care with causes and organizations that strengthen our communities.
The Whole Child Student Advisory is a student based organization. Their goal is to better school systems across Berrien County with the help of students. Students provide input based on the needs of their school districts as well as what may need improvement from a student's perspective. Then they develop projects and work to implement the projects to benefit each individual community.
