First-Ever BSHS Winter Track Training Has Begun (9/12/21)- Connor Petula

For the first time in BSHS history, the school has begun hosting off-season practices and workouts for track athletes over the Winter. Led by veteran coach John Oszustowicz (referred to as Coach O), these training sessions have been established for the benefit of students interested in track, other spring sports, or simply getting in shape over the course of the season who aren’t involved in any other winter sports. With this program, the school’s track coaches hope this will inspire students to reach their full potential in this coming track season.

Practices are between 3:15 and 4:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays. All students who aren’t currently involved in a winter sport are welcome.

Wrestling States (3/31/21)- Brinley Croft

This past Saturday, the 27th of March, the Bubbler wrestling team entered Cumberland Valley High School ready to win states.

Unfortunately, after falling short, they ended the day placing 4th (which isn’t too shabby considering COVID and everything they have had to endure this season).

Neither of the two matches ended how the Bubblers wanted. Each match resulted in losses, first to Southern Columbia and then to Burrell.

The first match against Southern Columbia proceeded until the very end, with the Bubblers losing 31-22.

Again, the Bubblers held on strong until Burrell upset them 26-13. Many underclassmen wrestled against these top schools, including Freshman Collin Neal and Ean Wilson. Some sophomores wrestled as well, and then a couple juniors.

Despite these losses, it is not troubling the Bubblers in any way and they are all looking forward to next season, as well as Coach Byers.

Rumor has it many wrestlers are coming up from middle school, as well as some returning from injuries and opting out because of COVID. Regardless of everything that went down Saturday, the Bubblers worked their hearts out and placed fourth in the state.

Between COVID, starting late because of the school being shut down, and all the masks, the Bubbler wrestling team held strong and did not give up.

I believe that is one of the most important qualities an athlete can have, and our school is lucky to have a wrestling team like that. I personally cannot wait to see what is in store for all of the wrestlers and for the wrestling team as they continue to work hard at this sport and give everything they’ve got.

As for the next time we’ll see the Bubbler wrestling team, it will most likely be at the end of the year towards the start of next year's wrestling season. Most of our wrestlers do compete during the summer at many tournaments around the East Coast, specifically the Disney Duals.

Who knows, maybe something will be in the news about one of them winning! Hopefully by the start of the winter season next year, COVID will have died down and masks will no longer be necessary, as well as spectators can attend matches.

Overall, I'd just like to congratulate the wrestling team on placing fourth at states and wish them all the best luck for next season and for their work during the summer. Congratulations Boys!

Wrestling Wins Districts (2/15/21) - Brinley Croft

As you may have heard earlier this week, our varsity wrestling team won districts on Monday, February 15, 2021 for the ninth time in program history, and the first time for head coach Trevor Byers after former head coach Rodney Wright retired in 2019. As one of the best wrestling programs in District 3 wrestling, COVID-19 was not going to stop the persistent Bubblers this year. The Bubblers started off their day with a match against strong and sturdy West Perry, which is always known to be a close match. The match ended in a 34-27 win for the Bubblers, progressing them onto the finals against Newport, where they pulled off an amazing victory winning 51-15. Coming in with a bunch of adrenaline, the Bubblers were eager to take home that district championship after a fall out to Hamburg last year. The championship match started off strong for the Bubblers, with major decisions from Raif Barber (113) and Austin Mahoney (120) and a pin from sophomore Eli Bounds (126). Some of the only points Newport scored was from Danny Capozzoli when the Bubblers forfeited at 132. I can remember when I went in on the following Wednesday, the 16th, and during band class my band director was eager to get a picture of two of the wrestlers in the band, Eli Bounds and Tommy Crum. He was so proud of them and couldn’t wait to post it on the Bubbler Band’s Facebook Page.

As for the next time you will see the wrestling team, they will be back at it on Saturday for district sectionals and then again on Sunday for individual district championships. There is no rest for them I see! Since the Bubblers won districts, they will be moving on to states, which they have won before back in 2015 under former head coach Rodney Wright. As for this year, they will have to wait a little longer since there is no set date yet. I have no doubt though that the Bubblers will keep on moving and doing what theydo best. I’m sure head coach Trevor Byers will be pushing them just as hard as he always does, trying to prepare for a state title. As a Bubbler who loves to watch our own team wrestle, I would love to see them make it far in states. Stay tuned for more information regarding the Bubbler Wrestling Team.
