As we celebrate Banned Books Week, we often talk about books that have been frequently CHALLENGED or banned. So what does it mean when we say a book has been challenged? That means the book has come under attack--someone tried to remove it from a school or a library, but the attempt failed. Usually, this means librarians, administrators, school boards, teachers, parents, students, and community members rallied together to defend the book and justify why it should be kept. In our country, it is far more common for a book to be challenged than for it to make it to the stage of being banned. Some books that have frequently been challenged include the Harry Potter series, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, The Hate U Give, Thirteen Reasons Why, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
