Assessments

Assessment in AP Calculus takes a different form than a typical classroom, and assessments will be different first semester (primarily focused on understanding of individual concepts) and second semester (more of an emphasis on understanding the relationship of concepts).

Concept Assessments

Primary component of Assessment grade during 1st semester. Less significant part of grade 2nd semester.
Assessments given often (multiple times per week)
Each assessment may cover a variety of topics (typically 2-4 topics)
Each concept on an assessment is graded independently on a 10-point scale - in other words, one assessment is really more like several smaller quizzes
Each concept will be assessed multiple times - a student's score that reported in SIS will be a weighted average of all scores for that concept out of 10 points. Each attempt will be weighted double the previous attempt (1st attempt weighted x1, 2nd attempt weighted x2, 3rd attempt weighted x4, etc.).
In general, assessments will not be announced, nor will the concepts that will be on them.
After content videos are due, those concepts will be practiced and discussed over the next week, and then available for assessment the following week.
Any concept dating to the beginning of the year could potentially be on any assessment. Concepts that have a higher probability of being assessed fall into the categories below (though they are not the only possible topics for assessment):
1. recently discussed concepts (from the previous week's videos)
2. concepts with poor overall performance on previous assessments
3. the number of times we have taken the assessment (the fewer times taken previously, the more likely it will show up again soon)
Students may re-take any concept one time, and that score will be included in the average score for that concept using the same weighted average as regular assessments. Assessment re-takes can be done almost any time (some options would be: during "work time" in class, before school, after school, during AP Lab at lunch or 7th hour). If there is a concept that you would like to re-take, please make arrangements with Mr. Betz.

AP-Style Multiple Choice Quizzes

The questions on these assessments come directly from AP materials, so they are as close as possible to the style of questions that will be on the AP test in May. 1st semester, the topics on these assessments will be closely related to material that we have recently covered in class.

AP-Style Free Response Quizzes

These assessments also come directly from AP materials, and will be graded exactly like the AP test is graded.
