"We are committed to ensuring that children in Nebraska receive timely autism diagnoses so they can begin receiving the support and services they need. "
Early autism diagnosis is crucial for a child's development because research consistently demonstrates that early intervention can profoundly enhance social and communication skills. Identifying autism spectrum disorder at an early stage allows for timely and targeted interventions, which are essential for fostering developmental progress and improving long-term outcomes.
Early intervention provides children with the tools and support they need to develop essential skills, helping them navigate social interactions, communicate more effectively, and achieve their full potential. By addressing developmental challenges early on, we can significantly boost their chances for long-term success and positive growth.
At Bridging the Gap Psychological Services, we are dedicated to facilitating early autism diagnosis to empower families and provide children with the best possible start. Our commitment is to enhance each child's development and support their journey towards a successful and fulfilling future.
Research shows that children who begin early intervention services, typically before age 3, experience significant gains in language, communication, and adaptive skills compared to those who start later. Early diagnosis enables access to specialized therapies like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), speech therapy, and occupational therapy, which are most effective when the brain is still highly adaptable.
Identifying autism early facilitates the introduction of social skills training and behavioral therapies that help children better navigate social situations. Studies demonstrate that early intervention can reduce problematic behaviors, enhance social interaction, and improve the likelihood of forming meaningful relationships.
An early diagnosis helps families understand their child's needs and access critical resources and support earlier. It allows parents to make informed decisions about education, therapy, and daily care, leading to reduced stress and an improved quality of life for the entire family.
Early diagnosis ensures that children receive personalized educational plans (IEPs) tailored to their unique needs, helping them succeed in school. This early start in educational settings can have a lasting positive impact on their academic performance and self-confidence.
Early identification may also help families qualify for additional resources, such as Social Security Disability benefits and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) developmental disability waiver, providing crucial financial and developmental support if they meet eligibility requirements.
At Bridging the Gap Psychological Services, we offer a comprehensive and efficient process for autism evaluations. Our step-by-step approach ensures you receive accurate results promptly, helping you access the support your child may need.
Our goal is to complete the evaluation within 3-4 weeks, depending on scheduling.
At Bridging the Gap Psychological Services, we follow a comprehensive and systematic approach to autism diagnostic evaluations, ensuring a thorough and accurate assessment. The process is divided into four key steps:
1. Initial Diagnostic Interview (IDI)
The evaluation begins with an Initial Diagnostic Interview. During this interview, we gather detailed information regarding the presenting concerns related to social communication, repeated and repetitive patterns of behavior and/or interests, and any additional challenging behaviors. The IDI also includes a thorough review of family history, school history, social history, and medical history. This comprehensive background helps us understand the child's developmental context and current challenges.
2. Standardized Testing Administration
Next, we conduct standardized testing to assess various aspects of the child’s behavior and development. Dr. Aaron White utilizes the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), which is widely recognized as the gold standard in autism assessment. The ADOS-2 involves structured activities and interactions designed to observe behaviors and social communication skills, and typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes to administer.
In addition to the ADOS-2, other standardized rating scales may be used to gain further insights into the child's functioning. These may include:
ABAS-3 (Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, Third Edition): Evaluates adaptive functioning and everyday skills.
CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist): Assesses a range of emotional and behavioral problems.
SRS-2 (Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition): Measures the severity of autism symptoms and social impairments.
ASRS (Autism Spectrum Rating Scales): Provides a comprehensive assessment of autism-related behaviors and symptoms.
3. Scoring, Review, and Interpretation
Following the testing, the examiner scores, reviews, and interprets all standardized tests administered. This involves a detailed analysis to determine whether the child meets the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The findings from the IDI, testing results, and interpretation are compiled into a comprehensive report, which also includes treatment recommendations.
4. Review of Results and Recommendations
Finally, Dr. White schedules a 45-minute appointment to review the results and recommendations with the family. This meeting can be conducted in person or via Telehealth, depending on the family's preference. During this session, Dr. White will discuss the findings, answer any questions, and provide guidance on the next steps for support and intervention.
This structured process ensures a thorough evaluation, providing families with valuable insights and actionable recommendations for their child's development.
