The start of a new year means the start of new classes. With both districts subscribing to the paid version of Schoology, we wanted to remind you of some key features:
Your Schoology courses will be automatically built based on your online grade book (SchoolTool)
Your students will be automatically enrolled in the appropriate courses based on the online grade book. Therefore, you do NOT need to give your students a course access code
The actual names of the courses may not be obvious, since the names are based on the course names in your online grade book. You can identify course sections (if necessary) by looking at the members in each course
It is possible to rename course sections to make things more clear (Please see how to video below)
Your courses from last year have not been deleted and it is possible to import last year's materials into your new courses
If you haven't already copied your course to resources, please visit the End of Year Procedures webpage
Courses in Schoology are not available until everything has been loaded into the online grade book system (SchoolTool), which is dependent on some variables within the district. There are a few other options available if you want to build materials before you are looking to build materials prior to your SchoolTool bases courses are built:
It is possible to build materials in the Resources area (on the top menu of the screen) or in a group. One thing to keep in mind is that some materials look and behave slightly differently in resources and a group. Another option is:
Create your own course and copy materials to that course, or build new materials there. Some advantages to this model are:
Materials will behave exactly the same as this is a course, just like your SchoolTool based courses
It is possible to have team members join your course as a co-admin to help build
The team members can also be demoted from co-admin to a "student" role within the course to gain the "student view" of the course materials
Once you SchoolTool courses have been created, it is possible to either copy materials over in a piece-mail fashion, or copy the entire course material set over using the "Copy to Resources" method outlined on the End of Year Procedures webpage mentioned above.
The video to the right shows how to create a Schoology course that is not SchoolTool based.
If you teach multiple sections of the same course, it can be helpful to link course sections together in Schoology. This procedure is best done BEFORE any materials have been added to a course.
The video to the left walks you through the process of linking sections on Schoology.
This video walks you through importing resources from a previous course into a new course, which can save you time.
Pay attention to the part at 1:25, it can make a difference in how the materials will look in your new course
Note: When you import resources into a new course, the following things will NOT be copied over:
Student submissions (those stay in the original course)
Due dates
Calendar items
Folder color choices
Depending on how many courses you have in Schoology, they may not all fit under the "Courses" tab at the top of the page. This tutorial shows where to find potentially "missing" courses, and how to re-order the list of courses.
Your district's online grade book determines the name for courses in Schoology, and sometimes it can be difficult to decipher that title. This tutorial video looks at how to get around this issue.
